Application of Type X Drywall

productcate-1-1
  • Garages And Mechanical Rooms

Building codes require fire-rated drywall between the garage and living spaces of homes to prevent fire spread.

  • Multifamily Residential Buildings

In apartment buildings and townhouses, fire-rated drywall is used between units to reduce fire spread across shared walls.

  • Stairwells And Corridors

Commercial and public buildings often use fire-rated drywall in stairwells and corridors to help contain fires and protect escape routes.

  • Utility Rooms And Service Areas

Areas with electrical panels, HVAC systems, and plumbing systems need fire-rated drywall to protect critical infrastructure.

Important Considerations Related to Type X Drywall

The Panels Are Non-structural
In other words, you cannot add other materials on walls or ceilings where fire-rated drywall has been installed. This type of material is built for safety and mounting other equipment on it can compromise its effectiveness.

It Shouldn't Be Exposed To Constant Moisture
Although some fire-rated drywall panels can be engineered to be resistant to mold and mildew, excessive exposure to moisture can compromise this benefit. The panels shouldn't be installed in places where cascading water is present.

Prolonged Exposure To High Temperatures Might Compromise It
Most types of fire-rated drywall panels can withstand fire for up to an hour, but high indoor temperatures can also degrade their composition. For example, it's not recommended to expose the panels at temperatures above 125 degrees Fahrenheit for a long period of time. This will reduce the fire-resistance rating of the panels, making them weaker and easier to get damaged.

Installation and Finishing Techniques

New Installs

Measure and cut: Measure the wall or ceiling area and cut the drywall sheets to fit. Use a utility knife to score and snap the drywall.
Hang the drywall: Secure the drywall sheets to the studs using drywall screws or nails, ensuring the sheets are flush and level.
Tape and mud: Apply joint tape over the seams and cover with a layer of joint compound (mud). Smooth it out with a drywall knife.
Sand and finish: Once the compound is dry, sand it smooth. Apply additional coats of compound as needed, sanding between each coat until the surface is smooth and ready for painting.

Repairs and patches

Cut out the damaged area: Use a utility knife or drywall saw to remove the damaged section.
Install a patch: Cut a new piece of drywall to fit the hole and secure it with screws or nails.
Tape and mud: Apply joint tape around the edges of the patch and cover with joint compound. Smooth it out and let it dry.
Sand and finish: Sand the area smooth and apply additional coats of compound if necessary. Sand again before painting.

Types of joint compound

All-purpose compound: Suitable for all phases of drywall finishing, including embedding tape, filling, and finishing coats.
Topping compound: Used for the final coat, providing a smooth finish that’s easy to sand.
Setting-type compound: Ideal for deep fills and repairs, it sets quickly and is less prone to shrinking and cracking.

FAQ

Q: Why is it called drywall?

A: Drywall is installed without using water. This is unlike plaster, which requires installers to wait for it to dry between adding on layers.

Q: Can you paint over drywall?

A: Yes, but do not paint directly over drywall. New, previously unpainted drywall needs to be primed before it is painted. Unprimed drywall will soak up an excessive amount of paint.

Q: What is the purpose of installing drywall?

A: Installing drywall serves several purposes, from finishing off a room by hiding insulation and wiring to constructing and dividing spaces in a home.

Q: Is type X drywall harder to install?

A: Type X drywall isn't invincible. While it slows down fire much better than regular drywall, it's still not the best option if you need maximum fire resistance. Plus, it's heavier and harder to install due to its thickness.

Q: How long will Type X drywall burn?

A: Typically one layer of Type X drywall promises 45 minutes to one hour of fire protection for the building constructed with this type of material.

Q: What are the alternatives to Type X drywall?

A: Alternatives to Type X drywall, especially for fire resistance, include Type C drywall (better fire rating), Fiber Cement Board, MgO (Magnesium Oxide) Board, Calcium Silicate Board, and even fire-rated plywood, offering better moisture/durability or different aesthetics; for non-fire areas, plywood, cork, or PVC panels are options, but always check local codes.

Q: Why use type X drywall?

A: The primary difference between standard drywall and Type X drywall lies in their composition. Type X drywall has the same gypsum core as regular drywall, but it also contains non-combustible glass fibers. The addition of these glass fibers significantly improves its fire resistance.

Q: What is the difference between type X and C drywall?

A: Type C drywall is an enhanced, premium version of Type X, offering superior fire resistance due to extra glass fibers and vermiculite in its core, which prevents rapid cracking and collapse during a fire, making it ideal for ceilings, while Type X is the standard fire-rated drywall, often used for walls, that's more affordable and versatile but less robust under prolonged heat. The key difference is Type C's additive (vermiculite) that expands to fill gaps as water evaporates from the gypsum, holding its integrity longer than Type X's standard glass fiber reinforcement.
